Although it can be hard to say no to ordering the burger and fries at a restaurant, it really is not that hard to customize a healthy meal for yourself when going out to eat! It takes a little bit of self-discipline and practice, but eventually making better choices will start to become a habit! It doesn’t have to be complicated! No matter where you are eating, you can ALWAYS find something healthy. Once we started learning how to order healthy meals at restaurants, it started to become second nature to us. Now, we genuinely enjoy ordering healthy foods! Here are some of our tips for how to eat healthy when dining out!
1. Look at the menu before you go.
This is a HUGE tip when going out to eat. We seriously always look at the menu before going out to a restaurant. If you look at the menu before you go, you will already know what healthy meal to order before you even get there. Being prepared is always key!
2. Check out MyFitnessPal or Nutritional information.
Almost every restaurant has nutritional information on their website or on MyFitnessPal. When we go out to eat, we always try to find the healthiest item on the menu and either order that or customize it to make it even healthier! It is always good to look at the nutritional information because some foods may have more calories than you actually think!
3. Ask your waiter to cook your food with no butter or oil.
You might think this sounds a little crazy at first, but trust us, it’s not! Most places cook their food with unnecessary amounts of salt, butter, and oil. Ordering your food without butter and oils will help you save some major hidden calories that you don’t even know you are consuming!
4. If you are ordering a salad, learn how to order a healthy salad.
Some salads can end up being more calories than the burger and fries, so be careful.
Step 1: Always ask for dressing on the side! Usually, dressings can ruin what was supposed to be a healthy salad. When ordering a salad, always ask for dressing on the side and dip your fork in it instead of pouring it on! By doing this, you still get all the flavor in each bite, but save over half the calories because you can control the portion! This also applies to other condiments like ranch, barbeque sauce, and mayonnaise. Try to stick to low-calorie condiments like hot sauce, mustard, ketchup, or salsa!
Step 2: Always try to load up on the healthier options first like a base of lettuce, tons of vegetables, and a lean protein. Then, add some fun toppings like cheeses, nuts, seeds, or croutons in moderation or just stick to one instead of all four to save some calories!
5. Stick to lean protein and veggies.
When we go out to eat, we almost always order some type of lean meat like chicken or fish, and some type of vegetable like broccoli or asparagus. We usually always ask to substitute grains with double veggies! Lean meats and vegetables are usually always the healthiest things to order when eating out. You can never go wrong! (Even if this type of meal is not written out on the menu, you can always ask your waiter for it and they will almost always give it to you!)
6. Always stick with water.
A lot of people don’t realize that they are consuming liquid calories when they are drinking sodas, teas, or lemonades. These calories can add up quickly, so stick to water! We always ask for extra lemons to add some flavor!
7. Stay away from the table bread or chips and salsa.
This can be hard when eating out, but you can save SO many calories just by not consuming the complimentary bread at a restaurant. If you don’t want to completely cut this out, you can also just try limiting yourself to one piece of bread or a couple chips with salsa instead of the whole loaf or basket.
8. Look for key healthy words.
When dining out at a restaurant, look for words like steamed, grilled, blackened, or roasted instead of fried, glazed, or battered! When veggies or meats are fried instead of grilled, this will completely ruin the healthy aspect of the meal.
9. Don’t go to the restaurant starving!
Even if you are not hungry before you go out to eat, always try to eat a little something in order to make sure you will not be starving at the restaurant. If you go starving, you will most likely want to eat everything in sight and be ravenous when you see food! Eating a small snack before you go can really help you in the long run!
10. Eat smaller portions.
We know at some restaurants the portion sizes can be huge, so if you struggle with eating every bite of food on your plate, try to take smaller bites, drink water in between each bite, and be mindful of when you are full!
We hope y’all find these tips helpful & healthful! 🙂
